When you buy binoculars, you expect them to last for quite awhile, especially if you’ve invested a fairly large bit of money in them. Not only is buying replacements not cost effective, it is also inconvenient. Simply by taking care of your binoculars when you are using them, and storing them properly when you are not will increase the life span of your binoculars and give you years of viewing pleasure.

It is especially important to protect the lenses of the binoculars, since they are the most valuable tool in them. Damaged lenses will render your binoculars useless. Always replace the lens caps on your binoculars to avoid scratches. Store your binoculars in a hard plastic case to avoid further damage, and be cautious not to drop or bang your binoculars. This could cause the alignment to go off, which is a very expensive thing to fix. Loss of alignment is one of the major reasons why binoculars suffer poor performance. Water, and the mildew it causes, is another major reason why binoculars need to be replaced. Once mildewing begins on the inside of lenses, it is nearly impossible to stop it without taking the binoculars apart. For this reason, using non-waterproof binoculars in wet weather conditions takes some amount of care. Keep them inside their case as much as possible, and if there is any chance of the case leaking, then store them inside a sealed plastic bag while in the case. Don’t carry them inside your clothing since this is a warm, humid environment and when you pull the binoculars out into the air they may fog up, which can lead to mildewing. If they get wet, be sure to dry them thoroughly with a clean towel, and then set them in a cool, dry place. Never attempt to use your binoculars underwater, as the water pressure will cause them to leak.
