When they buy binoculars, most people focus mainly on the magnification and don’t give much thought to other aspects that will affect their ability to enjoy them. For instance, lens coatings can greatly enhance the experience you have with your binoculars as they cut down on glare and allow more light to enter the lenses, which in turn results in better images. Ruby lens coatings are a popular anti-glare choice, and are used to limit reflections and produce a clearer, sharper image. They are a must for any serious binocular users, and well worth the extra money. Other anti-glare coatings come in gold, green, and blue, but the ruby color is the most popular by far.
When looking at a pair of binoculars with ruby lens coating, you’ll notice that they may look more reflective than other binoculars. This reflective coating is what cuts down on the glare when you are looking through them. It is important to note that ruby coated binoculars are not good for low level light conditions, since they will decrease the binoculars’ ability to take in light, making it more difficult to view images without strong light. Although some manufacturers do claim that ruby coating can be used as night vision binoculars, this is simply not true. Ruby coating the lenses simply cuts the glare and UV entering into the lenses. Also, birdwatchers should avoid ruby coating since it can give a blue tinge to the images you are looking at. This will make it difficult to really view the birds properly, and to note distinguishing characteristics.
As with all lens coatings, make sure to invest in the fully multi-coated variety. These are guaranteed to have multi-layered coatings on all air to glass surfaces. Manufacturers can be tricky in how they label their binoculars, so sticking with the fully multi-coated binoculars will ensure good quality anti-glare and UV protection.
