When you head out for a day in the sun, chances are you pack your sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses to protect your body from the potentially harmful UV rays that can lead to sunburn and eventually skin cancer. Most people do forget about the importance of protecting their eyes from UV light, and although they might use their sunglasses, this is rarely to protect their eyes but is instead to ease any potential discomfort at the outdoor brightness. However, it is very important to protect your eyes from UV light, as it can have a very damaging effect on your eyesight.
There are three types of UV light, with UVB rays the ones that cause sunburn and eye damage. When encountered with cold temperatures and snow, UVB rays can cause snow blindness, a painful condition that can last for up to forty-eight hours. Snow can reflect up to 80% of the sun’s UVB rays, while beach sand reflects about 15%, seafoam 25%, and normal ground surfaces 10%. UVB rays have also been linked to cataracts and eye growths. Often UV warnings are issued on days where the potential danger is quite high – these are the days where sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen are most important. However, don’t forget that during the winter the UV rays can still be strong enough to cause damage.
When you buy binoculars you should also consider eye protection by looking at binoculars with a UV lens coating. Although this won’t darken the image the way that sunglasses do, they do prevent the harmful UV rays from reaching your eyes and damaging them. If you are using your binoculars outdoors for extended periods of time, UV lens coating is a necessity for long-term health.
