Most lens coatings are of an anti-glare variety, which cut down on the light that is reflected inside the binoculars that creates hazy and difficult to see images. Anti-glare coatings not only create sharper images, but they also increase the amount of light that is beneficially used in the binoculars, meaning they are more suitable for use during periods of low light. UV protective coatings are also popular, since they protect your eyes from sun damage. You might also consider an anti-scratch coating, which will help your binoculars to stand up better to daily wear and tear, and also smudge-proof coatings which can cut down on the amount of cleaning.
It is important to pay attention to the manufacturers descriptions of how binocular lenses are coated. Most coatings are applied to air to glass areas, and one pair of binoculars can have up to sixteen air to glass surfaces. The best protection is labeled as fully multicoated, which means that all the air to glass surfaces have received multiple layers of coating. Expect to invest a little more in binoculars with this feature. There is also the multicoated variety, which simply means that at least one air to glass surface has more than one layer of protection. Fully coated means that all air to glass surfaces have one coating, although plastic lenses are usually not coated. Finally, coated optics simply states that one or more surface has one or more coatings.
