Keeping your binoculars is a must to ensure good quality viewing, and to extend their life. If you buy binoculars, you must be prepared to clean them properly, or you will be forced to quickly buy a replacement. It is either that or put up with poor image quality. Neither of these options is what you want, so taking the time to periodically quickly clean your binoculars will prevent a lot of future frustration.
You don’t typically need to clean your binoculars after every use. Usually, you will know to clean your binoculars because you’ll notice a fine bit of dust on the lenses. Or, no matter how careful you were not to touch the lenses, you might have found a smudge. These will both impair your ability to view good quality images, which will also be a telling sign that the binoculars need to be cleaned. Luckily, cleaning binoculars is actually quite simple. Remove the dust without rubbing the lenses – a pressurized can of air is the best tool to use. Because dust is made up of tiny, sharp pieces of rock, rubbing the dust off the lenses can easily scratch them. Once the dust is gone, it is safe to start cleaning the lens with a cloth. Use a microfibre cloth specifically made for camera lenses, and a camera lens cleaning solution. Do not use an eyeglass cleaning solution, as these can have chemicals that will damage the anti-reflective coating. You could also use a special lens pen instead of a cloth. Both options should be available at your local camera store. Never put your non-waterproof binoculars under running water to clean them, as this will cause the lenses to leak and water to get trapped inside.
If you use your binoculars in a marine environment, you may need to clean them more often. In this case, you will likely have a salt residue on the lenses which can easily scratch them. Be cautious not to rub the salt into the lenses. If your binoculars are waterproof, you can submerge them in fresh water to rinse off the salt.
