Neck and back pain is never fun, but are even less so when they impact on your favorite hobbies. If you find that, after a day out in the field, you are suffering from a sore neck, you might want to check the strap on your binoculars. Binoculars can be downright heavy to pack around, especially when combined with other gear, and we often carry them in an awkward way over our shoulders. The movement of the binoculars as we walk creates further difficulty, straining neck muscles. On top of all this, when you buy binoculars the straps that come with them is almost always a thin strip of hard plastic, which is not the most comfortable thing to have around your neck!
The best thing to do to prevent neck and back pain is to replace the strap on your binoculars with a wider strap of at least two inches. Remember, the wider the strap, the less pressure per square inch that is being placed on your shoulder. However, the strap also needs to be comfortable and not slip off your arm. You might also consider a strap made of soft, flexible material. Neoprene is an excellent option that really gives when you walk, and thus absorbs the shock of the binoculars movement and prevents damage to your shoulder. Make sure the strap is properly adjusted to your height and size, as an improperly adjusted strap can also cause damage.
If you find that you still suffer difficulty even when taking these precautions, you might want to switch to a strap system that allows you to carry the weight of your binoculars on your back, like a back pack. This will more evenly distribute the weight, and can help to eliminate discomfort. These are readily available from many binocular suppliers.
